The glossary is here to give you more information on our webhosting terms. If you require further information on a certain term we have used in here, please email our sales team at sales@twelve.net
Your own .co.uk / .org.uk / .ltd.uk / .plc.uk:
We are members of Nominet UK and will register your domain name for you, under you or your clients name and address, your Ltd or Plc company registration number is needed to register a .ltd.uk or .plc.uk domain.
Your own .com / .net / .org:
We commonly register domain names with Internic (www.networksolutions.com), the domain name will be registered under you or your clients name and address.
Webspace:
Each webhosting account comes with 'webspace' this is the amount of disk space we allocate you to store your webpages and other files, like images, movies & sounds or data files. Webspace may be bought in extra allocations, check with the sales team how much extra webspace is for your account.
IIS:
IIS stands for Internet Information Server, this is the type of webserver software we use with our Windows 2000 Hosting Accounts, this software is made by Microsoft and more information on the server can be found at this address, http://www.microsoft.com/windows/
Autoresponders:
Autoresponders are automatic programs built into our mailserver, a customer can email you and an automatic reply (that you make) will be sent to the customer acknowledging the email, useful for sales queries or tell people you are currently away.
POP3 Accounts:
A POP3 account is away of collecting mail from our mail servers. When someone emails your email address the mail is kept on our server until you login with some mail software (i.e.. Outlook Express) which then uses a password to retrieve the email out of that POP3 box.
Email Forwarding:
Email forwarding allows you to have emails automatically forwarded to your dialup address, i.e. bob@mydomain.com would go to bob@mydialup.co.uk
Email Aliasing:
Email aliasing allows you to have for example one POP3 box and have sales, jobs, info, webmaster and bob@ all arriving at it automatically, this makes it much easier to look after your email.
Microsoft FrontPage Extensions:
These are for use with Microsoft FrontPage only (http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/ ). This software is ideal for beginners and allows things like one click publishing and web bots (quick and easy counters, etc)
Transfer Limit:
We impose a traffic limit that is monthly, the traffic is built up only from users viewing your website, not from email, ftp or anything else. This means if your website is 100k and 10 users looked at all of it, you would have transferred 1000k (1024k is one megabyte).
Active Server Pages:
or .asp as they are known is a scripting format built into webpages hosted by Microsoft Webservers, these allow you to make things such as guestbooks up to database interactivity.
Nightly Backups:
We backup your files nightly onto DLT tapes, the tapes are rotated daily once a week taken offsite for safety
Nightly Web statistics:
We provide nightly web statistics for your website, this shows you where your visitors are coming from and what they are looking at, like which are the most popular pages, etc.
Technical Support:
We offer technical support by phone, fax, email and a technical support website at http://support.twelve.net . Most companies only offer technical support by email.
Same Day Setup:
We offer same day setup on all accounts that are paid by credit card before 5:30pm. If you are paying by cheque we will setup the account on the day the cheque arrives.
Dell Servers:
We use Dell PowerEdge 4400 Servers for our Windows 2000 Hosting, these are extremely reliable servers with redundant power supplies and RAID capability. (http://www.dell.co.uk/business/)
Webmail:
With our Webmail service you can logon to our mailserver from anywhere in the world and check your email, reply to email or send new email.
twelveDIAL:
This is our dialup Internet access service via 0845 lo-call. This service allows you to use up to a 56k modem, v.90, single channel ISDN and comes with email and webspace for a personal webpage.
Mailing List:
With a mailing list you can inform groups of customers at once and they can reply back and each user on the list will get a copy, ideal for staff discussion lists or for product discussion lists for clients.
FTP Updates:
This is the most common way of updating your website, you use some free software to upload your webpages to your account and can rename and delete files this way too.
Telnet & SSH Access:
This allows you to telnet into the server and edit files, test cgi scripts and setup things like password protected directories, MySQL databases.
Custom Error Pages:
This allows you to edit your own custom error pages, so if a user types in a wrong page on your site you can show them a friendly reminder in your colours and logo telling them they have made a mistake.
Password Protected Directories:
With this feature, you can password protect important directories, stopping anyone just looking at information in them, ideal for private client information or company information for clients.
Secure Server Access:
We provide SSL access to some of our accounts for free, this will be in the form of https://secureX.twelve.net/username where X happens to be the server number. You may upgrade to your own secure certificate (https://secure.yourname.com) for an additional fee which is listed on the add-on pages.
Your own /cgi-bin/:
This allows you to store and run your own .cgi's, these are programs that allow you to perform functions, like guestbooks, counters, feedback forms, etc. More .cgi's can be found here (click).
MySQL Database:
MySQL databases are available with some of our packages, more details on MySQL can be found here http://www.mysql.com
Service Side Includes:
SSI as they are more commonly known allow you to run 'functions' in webpages, like get the latest date, or show a text file or perform other features whilst a webpage loads.
PHP Support:
PHP is available on some web accounts, this is a scripting language that can be used alongside webpages and used to work with databases under UNIX, more information on PHP can be found here.
Python Support:
Python is available on some web accounts, this is a scripting language that can be used alongside webpages, more information on Python can be found here.
Access to raw log files:
With some accounts we offer access to the raw log files made by our server for your website. This allows you to download them and put them into some web stats program like Webtrends

We offer a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee on some accounts, applications for money back must be made in writing within the 30days and a full refund except domain registration fees (as outlined in the Terms & Conditions) will be refunded to you within 10 working days.

APC Ups Backup:
We currently use APC UPS's to run our servers off. This stops power spikes and outages due to power cuts, we commonly use the SmartUPS 3000 Rackmount models and the Matrix series UPS
Multiple Domains Allowed:
Client Traffic:
With the PRO account we allow your client's to have a traffic allowance higher than standard domains (usually 1 gigabyte per month) check the package to see what traffic is allowed for your client domains.
